So... We made it to Lawton/Fort Sill! My iPhone GPS said it would take 16 hours and 38 minutes from our home in Michigan. We decided that since it would take at least two days we wouldn't get up super early. Yeah, we left by 6:30 am! I guess that's better than our original departure time of 4:30 am!
We were on the road for about 15 hours on day one. We made longer stops for lunch and dinner so that Jack could have a break from his carseat. We only needed to make two additional stops for bathroom breaks/ diaper changes or gas. So not too bad all things considered. We made it to Tulsa and got a hotel.
We drove the length of Illinois, through Missouri, and on into Oklahoma. It was interesting when we would change highways and GPS would say 231 miles to next turn... That's a pretty long time! The drive was pretty easy since it major highways and we stayed on them for hours. Matt and I both drove the first day.
Jack did great in the car. He slept plenty, which was great since he had a icky cold the past week. The rest was probably just what he needed. I would hear his toys moving around and peek back and he would be playing by himself! I was so surprised he wouldn't wake up crying since he was strapped in. I kept a bucket of toys next to him so he could pull them out, but each stop I would put new toys in his lap within easy reach so he had a variety. He cried twice when he just needed a break. As soon as we got out for a bit he was all smiles and didn't fuss getting back in his seat. He was a good little traveler.
The second day we got on the road around 10:30 am and finished the drive to Lawton. We arrived around 1:30 pm. We stopped for some lunch and went to our hotel for the night. We thought we mighty explore, but it was so nice just relaxing at the hotel! We stayed in and Jack loved being able to roam free in the room.
We did some research on the town and post and there are good things and bad things. I'm going to wait a couple weeks for my thoughts in Lawton though. So far, Oklahoma had been a pretty pleasant place. Speed limit on the highways is 75, which is incredible and people seem to be more courteous on the roads. It really doesn't seem that different than Michigan so far, except we can wear short sleeves!
Some things I'm not excited about- no Target in the area, none of my favorites clothing stores in the mall, Comcast doesn't serve our area (which may turn out to be a blessing in disguise I suppose).
I think the most stressful thing about relocating is setting up new Internet, cable, things like that, finding a new gym and a new church, and just finding things period!
Here we go! Our first military installation!
