Jack has been learning so much this month! So many new words! It began on January 1, apparently Jackson's New Year's resolution was to begin talking! We're not sure if Waverly being here over Christmas (she speak very clearly and is 5 months older than Jackson) helped him want to talk more, or if he was just ready on his own. So the first we really noticed him talking was when he brought over the number 8 from his puzzle and said "eet". We were so proud of him! We hadn't worked on numbers with him, so I'm assuming he learned that from his app Charlie and the Numbers on Baby TV. He also knew five "bize". After this his vocabulary quickly expanded: "naan" nine, "tuck" stuck, star, duck, dog, "sss" six, this- for both the thing he's holding and thank you, down, brush, "ah pul", two, "Bour" four, "tchuck" truck, boom, on, off. So many words! He still says "thhssss" for please and "moe" for "more" while he signs those words. He also signs banana, brush teeth, and car- all of which he just learned from the baby sign language app he uses since I didn't work on those specific ones with him.
It is so cute to listen to him learn new words. He is a little sponge lately. Sometimes it takes us awhile to figure out that he learned a new word. One time he was sitting next to me on the couch saying "tuck" over and over again. I was reading and not paying attention for about 2 minutes. Then he tapped my head and said "tuck tuck!" more urgently. I look over and he had wedged hit feet between the back of the couch and the cushion so that he couldn't get them back out! He had sat there just saying that he was stuck waiting for help! That was the first time we realized he knew that word. Another time I knew he knew the word two, but he was walking back and forth across the living room saying "two two two two". I figured he was just repeating his new word like he often does. Then I look over to his numbers puzzle on the floor and all the numbers are there except two! He was looking for it! He had wedged it between the couch cushions earlier so I got it for him and he was so happy when I held it up for him!
We went to Lynchburg for Savannah's wedding. I was a bridesmaid so was gone most of the day Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We were staying with friends and Matt was a little nervous how Jack would do for that long without me. He fussed a little, but did so much better than we expected! I think it helped him and Matt get closer too. I think Matt is much more confident on his own with Jackson now and Jackson feels a greater bond with Matt than before. They have always had a great relationship, but Jackson now knows Daddy can comfort him just as much as Mumma.
He also mimics a lot of things he sees Matt and I do. He knows to go to the towel to dry his hands after we wash them. He puts my makeup brushes up to his face when he's sneaky enough to grab one. After he brushes his teeth he makes a spitting noise. He'll also make the spitting noise by the toilet since Matt sometimes spits into the toilet. He began putting his fingers in his mouth when he watched Matt flossing his teeth. He is just so funny! Thankfully he hasn't picked up on any bad traits yet. We don't swear anyways so we don't have to worry about that, but we have been more careful about what we watch on TV or the computer (YouTube or video games) around him so he doesn't learn those words. It does make you think about your actions, though, when there's a little person observing everything you do!
Jackson continues to be a good little eater, but he is much more particular. He stills eats a large variety of food, but sometimes he doesn't want what's places in front of him. If he was expecting a banana and I give him grapes he melts down until I get him a banana. He does fairly well eating his food, but sometimes he just knows he wants something else! He loves fruit snacks and asks for then often, but we limit when he can have them and how often during the day. He loves going over to where they are on the counter and fussing for them. He doesn't seem to care for chocolate, cottage cheese, or tuna fish (which I'm certainly not complaining about). Besides Broccoli, these are the only foods he hasn't liked so far.
He hadn't been sleeping through the night recently. I think his molars are coming in and he broke one of the pieces of amber on his necklace so he hasn't been wearing it. Ibuprofen seems to help him sleep longer stretches at least. He also has night terrors sometimes. It's difficult to comfort him during this. I know I just need to be there for him and wait for him to settle down/wake up. It sure makes me tired in the morning though. Just last night he had two night terrors so I snuggled with him on the couch and when he finally calmed down and went back to sleep he still would whimper so it kept me awake trying to stop the terrors before they made him cry.
On January 13 we began potty training! We're taking a much more casual approach than I thought I would. The first couple days I had him pantless until Matt got home in the evenings. He was interested in his potty, but didn't like sitting on it. He held his business in until I put him in a diaper for nap or when Daddy got home. He soaked them through pretty quickly then. I didn't like that he was just holding it so we'll do spurts without pants and then have some fun play time with diapers on so he can relax. We got him a Little Critter book on potty training and I downloaded some apps on using the potty. When he's in a diaper I try to sit him on the potty before changing him so he associates it. He does like his potty to be out, not away in the bathroom. I keep track of his successes and accidents. I have been able to stop him peeing on the floor a couple times and put him on the potty to finish. I saw him starting to poop once and got him in the potty quick enough. One time when I was in the shower he pooped on the bathroom floor, but he just stood there in the corner looking at me until I saw he pooped and cleaned it up. So I'm glad he didn't play with it and that he came to me right away. No really messy accidents yet though. He did pee all over my leg and slipper once, but we finished that pee on the potty too!
When we visited Jonathan and Amanda Vandegriff's new house (they just moved here and bought a house a couple streets over! We can walk there without even having to go on a main road!) he was such a great listener! They were doing some remodeling, have a 6 month old, and dogs. We would tell him to come back into the living room when he would look into the destroyed kitchen, not to touch things or I put things back, and to be gentle. He listened so well and I never had to go get him or stop him from doing something. I was very impressed and it made me so proud to be able to show him off that way- since he doesn't always listen that we'll at home! We watched Judah one day and he got some good big brother practice in. He was so concerned when she was sad (when I went in the kitchen for a moment etc) and he would try to give her toys to make her happy. So so adorable! He wouldn't rock the swing or bounce the jumperoo harshly either. I think he'll do well once Daniel arrives, but he was very snuggly while Judah was over.
I also started going to a new Bible study on post. He goes to the Watchcare room during that time, just down the hall from me. He seemed to do well in the room- no crying when I picked him up. He did fuss a little when I left the room, but that's to be expected. I'm glad he wasn't like some of the kids who seemed to fuss the whole time. I'm sure that wasn't fun for the workers. I'm glad Jack will have some socialization during the week with other kids. It didn't seem like they had much organization, just let the kids do what they wanted and had a movie going, but that's ok. When Jack is 3 he'll probably go to preschool for more learning.
It's been such a month of growth. We also got him some books on the "new baby" to help him learn about being a big brother. He is growing into such a wonderful little person and I am so proud!
He thought he was so funny with this basket on his head.
Peek!
He didn't want to put it away for his nap.
Corneilsons and Oxfords passed through town after the holidays so we all got lunch together. Rachel was playing with Jack and waving his arms around... And he fell asleep!
Jack wanted to wear one of Matt's shirts. It was so cute and he looked like a little Jedi! All he needed was a belt!
He loves to point out his nose, ears, etc.
We went to Lynchburg for Savannah's wedding and stayed with the Frye's. He loved their dog Tyson and just confirmed that someday we'll need to get him a dog!
While in Lynchburg we had a play date with Puigs. Elijah loved playing with Jackson!
Elijah is 3 and seems so big! He talks so clearly and can do so much more than Jack. Hard to believe how much difference a year makes!
I just love when he snuggles with Matt.
Potty training! He didn't go during these pictures, just getting him used to sitting on it. He does like that it sings and lights up when he goes!
Lots of pantless days!
We had a beautiful day here that wasn't too cold to play outside. He decided to try some dirt. He didn't like it.
I love having a yard the boys can just run around in. Jackson loves when the Daddy monster chases him.
Reading his new potty book while he sits on the potty.
I don't think he's ever spent an entire night in his bed. He loves to burrow under the pillows next to his bed! We ordered his big boy bed and we'll see how he does with the guard rail up.
Jackson selfie.
Playing nicely with Judah Rose.
Our little family at Savannah's wedding. Jack did well during the ceremony, but when I walked down the aisle to leave he started crying. Much better than when I first entered though!
Yes, it has been quite the month. He has grown up so much! He really is becoming my little man.
[edit]
Jackson loves to plank! He will push himself between the couch and chest and lie there tummy up or down and play on my phone. We checked and he's not leaning his chest or tummy on the couch at all, just his forearms and his legs! No wonder he's so skinny!
Jackson loves being spun around in circles in Daddy's office chair. We then play "drunk baby" and try to get him to walk afterwards. I wonder when you stop liking being dizzy and hate it! Because I know I hate it!
Jackson hates wearing socks or having anything on his feet if we're not leaving the house. His little piggies get so cold, but it doesn't seem to bother him. He'll whine and pull on them until he gets tem off of he starts actually crying and I have to help him.
Just a few other very "Jackson" things I don't want to forget later!
