Why I love Being a Mommy

Mother's Day was bittersweet this year as I celebrated my amazing son, Jackson, and our angel baby.

But this will be about Jackson.

I am so proud of my little boy. I cannot imagine having any more love for him than I do. I just about burst with love every time I hold him, every time he grins, every time he laughs. He has grown into such a smart, funny boy. I love spending every day with him and am so thankful I am able to stay home.

Some updates on Jack: He has been growing! I'm not positive on his weight, but I can tell he has gained. This is good since he was on the low side of the growth chart at his 1 year appointment. He eats just about everything and we order him kid's meals at restaurants now (but we take most of it home for later). Jack's favorite foods appear to be strawberries, grapes, celery, ham, and ravioli. I have stopped buying baby food, but still buy the baby food pouches to keep in the diaper bag in case Jack needs a snack while we're out. I feed him regular food for meals and he generally has some of what we're having. He consistently signs "more" and "all done" during meal times. He has signed "please" a few times also.

Jack has stopped using words for the most part. Unfortunately, since we're together all day I know his mannerisms so well he usually doesn't need to speak. I have been trying to stop anticipating his wants and needs and waiting for him to ask for something. He doesn't really like this. He still says "Da Da" and "Mum Mum" for Matt and I though.

Jack now consistently sleeps in his own crib for the entire night! He still wakes to nurse a couple times a night, but I don't mind doing that. It is such a relief to not have to worry about him rolling off the bed in the night. When he wakes up and I'm not there beside him he does get alarmed, but he is beginning to understand that when he wakes up and makes noise I will come right away. He hasn't woken up really crying for about a week. There were a couple times when he woke up shrieking, like a bad dream, which leads me to believe he still has night terrors (just like I did). I do typically crawl into his crib with him to get him to sleep, which is the next step I want to work on. Even if I'm patting his back he typically wants to fall asleep snuggled up with me. So adorable, which makes it hard to stop!

Jack has been drinking a lot more milk and water. He still nurses throughout the day, but the sessions are much much shorter. He uses a variety of sippy cups now, but seems to favor the ones with straws.

Jack loves playing "This Little Piggy", reading "Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?", reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear", playing with his stacking blocks, and playing with his ball popper. After setting up his toy organizer he walks over to it and picks out what toys he'll play with. It is so much fun to see him play with different toys and figure them out. He is so smart with toys. He'll try mixing and matching his toys to see what happens- he'll often look at me and grin when he puts two toys together that don't go together, like he's being silly!

Jack is an expert walker now. He is slowly learning how to step up and down on small steps (like curbs outside). He is a bit intimidated by these steps and he'll lean way over with his rear sticking out while I'm holding his hand. He doesn't want to go near the edge. But slowly he's learning to step down slowly and then move his other leg. He gets very proud of himself when he does something new and will clap for himself.

When we ask him "How old is Jackson?", he'll point his fingers in "1" and clap his hands for himself. He has recently discovered that when he blows against Momma's leg or arm (or his own arm) that is makes a raspberry sound. He will do this over and over. Momma laughs at it so he continues to do it!

Jackson has had croup and a yeast infection recently. Croup was no fun as a Mommy. Jackson was pretty miserable and we stayed at home so we didn't spread it. It lasted about a week. We bought a cool humidifier for Jack, which helped so much. Before the humidifier he would cough and then cry. After the humidifier his cough quickly lessened in harshness and he wouldn't cry. The yeast infection is pretty much all gone, but it was in his cloth diapers so it kept coming back. I didn't know what it was at first so I kept treating it like diaper rash, even though it looked different. I stripped his cloth diapers and he's been in disposables for a couple days now to make sure it's all cleared up.

Jack still does not like being away from Momma or DaDa. When we drop him off at the church nursery he begins to cry even before we pass him over to the workers. He recognizes where we are and is not happy about staying without us. He usually stops crying and plays with other kids or just sits on one of the adults' laps. This past week when we came he looked like he never stopped crying and was still pretty worked up. He usually calms down quickly when we have him again. Poor little guy. I want to keep putting him in nursery so he gets used to being with other adults. The next couple weeks he will be with babysitters a couple times so hopefully he will behave for them!

Jack is just such a bright little light. I am so thankful for him and for the person he is growing up to be. It is such an honor to raise him and teach him. I am just so thankful that he is my little boy.
